Max was going in. Something about the house just didn’t feel right. It had a look like it was ready to fall into the earth any moment. He could always lie later and say he heard someone scream inside.

He stood to the side of the door, knowing he should call out to identify himself, but he still had the element of surprise. If he could get the door open quietly, he might be able to get the drop on him or them.

Oh, God. What if there was more than one?

Max took a deep breath. If he charged in, he could get the drop on one person, maybe two. But if he just stood here then maybe she died and her killers escaped. But if he charged in got the drop on one and missed the other, then he and the girl were dead.

Max made a deal with himself. If this door was unlocked he’d go in, try to arrest whoever was on the other side of this door. If the door was locked, then he would stay put and wait for backup. Everything by the book. If she died, it would be his fault, but he wanted to make it home tonight.

Max’s hands hovered over the doorknob. He counted three, grabbed it, and turned.

The door sprang open.

Max swore under his breath, but didn’t waste any time after that, quickly spinning into the open doorway, gun pointed. He stepped inside, his head on a swivel, arms turning wherever his eyes pointed. There seemed to be a conversation coming from somewhere ahead. Max headed in that direction and came to a closed door. He was standing in what looked like a dining room, but everything had been completely destroyed with what must have been a sledgehammer. Four old wooden chairs stood around a square mass of wood on the floor in various states of disrepair. The smell in here was like rotten meat and waste, layered with what smelled like Lysol.

He took a step toward the door and the floor creaked. Immediately, the conversation stopped. Max listened too, hoping they would begin talking again. He hadn’t been able to make out any of the words, but it sounded like two people.

His first thought had been to kick open the door and surprise whatever was on the other side. With a gun pointed in their faces, they wouldn’t move. But if they did, two center mass would stop them in their tracks. Max had never killed anyone, but if it meant his survival he would. He hoped.

But he never got the chance to surprise them as the door exploded inward and a massive human being charged straight at him. Max backpedaled in surprise before getting off two quick shots. One went high and struck the wall, the other seemed to hit home but the train of a human being barely slowed down.
